Episode 24 – CONCACAF Champions League

With Toronto FC in the Concacaf Champions League Final against Club Deportivo Guadalajara this week as well as MLS teams doing well in this years competition, we thought it’d be a good idea to talk about the Concacaf Champions League.
The CONCACAF Champions League is an annual continental club football competition organized by CONCACAF for the top football clubs in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The winner of the CONCACAF Champions League qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup.  It is the North American Equivalent of the Champions League or Copa Libertadores.
Originally Called the Champions Cup, it was first played in 1962. In its existence it has held many different formats but only two American clubs have ever won it, with a vast majority of Winners coming from Mexico. Despite being such a prestigious tournament, getting attention for the Champions League in the United States is a long-term problem. Lots of fans either don’t know it exists or don’t care enough about it to give it their time.
